How do I remove recessed florescent and replace with normal ceiling?
In the center of my kitchen ceiling, I have recessed florescent lighting. The area is about 4 feet square, and about 1 foot deep..
I want to remove the florescent lighing and replace it with a ceiling (to install recessed incandecent lighting.)
I guess the bottom line is what’s the best way to attach the sheet rock that would bring the recessed area down to the rest of the kitchen ceiling height?
There is no place to nail it in, except at the level where the floresent light fixtures were mounted (which is about a 12 inches higher, (relative to the floor), than the rest of the ceiling.
Any help would be greatly appreaciated.
If the lower part of the ceiling is around 8′, then you can simply add nailing strips, recessed 1/2″, around the perimeter and across the opening, on 16″ centers and then apply your sheetrock. Use 2×4’s set on edge for this.
If the lower part is less than 8′ by any substantial amount, I highly recommend that you remove the dropped ceiling surrounding the opening and raise the entire ceiling to the height of the opening. You will be much happier with the result and your kitchen will feel so much roomier and airier.
Such dropped ceilings are USUALLY removable without structural impact…but not always. Sometimes you will find plumbing pipes hanging down from an upper level bathroom. Sometimes you will find structural beams in them.
The only way to find out, is to look at original plans for the structure (even those are often changed), or open up the area enough to look inside. I recommend the latter as the only foolproof solution.
Code in most communities requires a minimum 7′ ceiling in a habitable room such as a kitchen.
