How to install recess lighting, is it hard?
I would love to add more lighting to my Kitchen and Living Room. It is such a large open area that the ceiling fan light and the small chandelier are not working real well because they themselves are in a recess cutout in the ceiling. So I would like to outline the cutout recess ceiling with recess lighting. How hard would it be to add the new lighting and can a DIY be able to handle the job.
Depends on the construction of the house and your skill level. The problem is not so much cutting the holes for the housings if you have a newer house with drywall ceilings (you will need to buy “old work” housings that can fit in through the holes) but in fishing the cable to feed them through the walls and ceiling spaces. Unless you are a pretty skilled DIYer this could be a real challenge for you and you would need some specialized tools like flexi-bits and fishtapes. If your house is older and the ceiling is plaster it will be a really tough project. Also, if it is a recessed area (like a tray ceiling) you may not have enough clearance for normal-sized recessed lights. if you have access from above from an attic space it might be do-able but that would be unusual unless you live in a ranch-style house.
I would not reccommend this as a DIY project if you don’t have some previous wiring retro-fit experience.
