Live Earth- Not A Concert In Aid Of Global Warming!!?
I have a ‘chandelier’ that has been fine since it was installed several years ago. It has started to blow with a loud pop and smoke comes out of it when switched on at the wall light switch. (No smug answers saying ‘don’t turn it on then’ please… knobheads)
Anyway… This obviously trips the breaker for the lighting circuit. On inspection with a voltage detector, I discovered that there is a voltage apparent in the earth wire. It is still present when the LIVE and NEUTRAL are disconnected in the ceiling rose. A large amount of liquid was spilt on the floor directly above the fitting directly prior to the problem developing and is almost certainly connected even though the cable to the rose is surface mounted and seams unaffected. One of the lamp sockets has some charring on the contacts, however the problem persisted after I took this socket out of the circuit…

When the live, neutral and earth wires are disconnected at the ceiling rose does the breaker still trip when the wall switch is turned on? If so then it sounds like you have a fault somewhere in the circuit breaker panel or somewhere in the circuit wiring or fixtures that will need to be traced down and repaired. It maybe just a bad wall switch or receptacle somewhere. You may have had a lightening strike that caused a short to occur somewhere in the circuit or in the fixtures attached to it.
If it only trips when the light fixture is connected then it sounds like there is a fault within the fixture wiring that needs to be repaired or the fixture replaced. With the fixture wiring disconnected and light bulbs removed you can check for continuity between the live, neutral and ground wires. If there is continuity between any of them then you will need to repair or replace the fixture.
To trace faults in the circuit you need to switch the breaker to off and use a volt/ohm meter to check continuity between the live and neutral and live and earth wires. You will need to disconnect bits of the circuit to isolate and test for faults in that area. Note that since the neutral and earth are connect in the breaker panel you will see continuity between the neutral and earth wires at fixtures in the circuit and that’s o.k.
If you are not familiar with house wiring then you should contact an electrician to troubleshoot the wiring and inspect the panel connections.
