removing frost from vintage glass?
My in-laws found a great pendant light at Goodwill for $6.00. I think the glass is antique or at least very old, but the rest of the hardware has been updated. The glass itself is oval shaped, about 1/2 in thick and 12 in tall and 12 in wide. There are ridges and flowers around the rim. The problem is that there is frosting on it that appears to be added by someone. You can see where it has scraped off on some of the ridges on the glass. The fixture will hang from a 9ft ceiling.
1) Would it be easier to leave it and clean off some oil like smudges or to remove the frosting?
2) In cleaning the smudges will I remove the frost?
3) How do I do either of these?
The glass is extremely heavy and has a lot of adornment such as flowers and medallions on it. It is so thick that I do not believe frosting was/is necessary. Besides, if it came with frosting it would be etched and would not scrape off.
I’d start with a wet toothbrush and some baking soda and see if the simplest, cheapest solution won’t clean the glass and get rid of the added frost. If it’s a little stubborn, then put some baking soda on the glass and use vinegar instead of water on the toothbrush. You can alway get more aggressive with things, but you risk a little harm to it if you get too aggressive. If the baking soda works, awesome. If not, then try a little simple scouring powder on the toothbrush and wipe well after each panel. Scouring powder won’t hurt glass and the toothbrush will get into the crevices, so it should be just fine.
After you get it clean, just pick up another can of window frost at Michaels or Home Depot (usually in with the spray paint) and reapply it.
